Mystery Nights

It was in the late hours of the night. I was awake because my final exams were going on. My parents had just retired to bed… I glanced at the clock. It was 12:45 a.m. already. I got up and closed the door of my study, switched off the main light lit the table lamp for convenience, and finally drew the chair and again sat down for studying.

“The day after tomorrow is my exam, and I have 15 more chapters left to complete. Oh God… please help me! I must study hard tonight or I won’t be able to complete it.” I said to myself. I composed myself and started studying. I

had not noticed when and how time did flow. Suddenly, my concentration was broken and disrupted by the loud noises of anklets. I was dumbstruck… and soon I was shocked too because the noises of anklets seemed to be coming from the staircase.

The whole ambience was silent outside my window, except for the occasional barking of the dogs. A cold breeze blew into my room through the window, which made me shiver.

All of a sudden, the sound of the anklets now again, made a chill run down my spine. What could be the source of the noises? I could not make out at all. I became more and more puzzled. My hands and feet trembled as I got up once to approach the closed door.

I sat down on my chair when all of a sudden, the sounds stopped. I gained courage and was about to call out to my parents when again the mysterious sounds started. And this time, my voice seemed to choke in my throat and any word seemed not to issue from my mouth.

I was dumbstruck again in great fear. I was sweating profusely in the middle of winter season.

I finally decided not to pay any heed to the noises. I started reading my text loudly. Soon the sounds were not audible. I thought that I succeeded in doing my work without being afraid. But, again it started, and this time loud noises of footsteps could be heard clearly. I could feel my heart beating vigorously.

The noise of footsteps started increasing, and my fear knew no bounds. I was at a loss to understand what I was supposed to do at that moment. At one time I felt as if someone was standing just on the other side of the door. I kept sweating and thinking who could it be… It was not possible for anyone to enter the house and both my parents were fast asleep.

Finally, I fainted. When I woke up, I saw my mom standing beside the study table and saying “You were studying so hard that you fell asleep on your study table?”
